Daily update
SATURDAY JULY 24 - The first day of the catfish derby
is in the books. The rain and thunderstorms held off but it was pretty
hot out on the water. I'm very surprised at how hard it was for people to
get catfish over 2lbs and at how small the fish are on the leader board, granted it is the first day. So the derby is wide open at the moment with no fish over 5lbs weighed in. Nobody registered the 12 fish maximum for the boat package which was also very surprising. The most fish by any one person was 9. Most people were catching a lot of fish under 2lbs. There was one fish 7.5lbs but it was in very rough shape with a missing eye and fins almost gone. It was not able to be released live thus was not allowed to enter.
38 people weighed in qualifying catfish fish over 2lbs with a total of 93 entries for the boat package. 16 people weighed in at Horton and 22 at Braeside.
The largest fish was weighed in at the Horton Boat launch
SUNDAY JULY 25 - Day 2 is now complete. It was a very windy day on the river and it kept a lot of boats off the water. 27 fish were weighed in at the Horton boat launch and 52 at the Braeside boat launch for a total of 79. We still haven't had anyone weigh in the maximum 12 fish. Stephane Allard came close with 10. 10 out of 79 tickets today is pretty good odds for winning the boat package. Another fish @ 9lbs was not able to be entered because it was not alive. If you are fishing at night ensure you have the proper place to keep your fish alive. They need air in a tank/barrel/tote bin for any length of time.
The largest fish was again weighed in at the Horton boat launch. Still 6 days to go and any fish over 2lbs gives a great chance for the boat package.
MONDAY JULY 26 - sorry about updating the site so late. I Had a couple of softball games tonight. Day 3 is now complete. The wind was very strong at the braeside boat launch and it kept a lot of people off the water until late this evening. The weather looks pretty good the rest of the week. There were 17 fish weighed in at the Horton boat launch and 13 at Braeside for a total of just 30 for the day. That brings the total to 202 entries for the boat package. I honestly thought by this point as did others that there would be 2000 entries. It is now very evident at how hard it is going
to be to get the maximum of 12, 2lb catfish. That being said I'm going kick in an Okuma rod and reel combo as a prize (@$70 value) for the fist person to weigh in 12 catfish. There were a couple of changes to the leader board. The heaviest fish today was weighed in at Braeside.
TUESDAY JULY 27- Day 4 is now in the books. It was a very nice day on the water today and a lot more people were able to get out on the main river. There were 42 fish weighed in at braeside and 26 at horton for a total of 68 for the day. That brings the total entries for the boat package to 270. The largest fish was weighed in at braeside and weighed 11.9lbs. There was finally someone who entered in the 12 fish maximum. Sean Kromrey weighed in 12 and between the 3 of them they weighed in 18 very nice fish well over 2lbs. They certainly found the spot to fish. They weren't out very long and had 7 entries and then went out again early afternoon and came back with 11 more. Sean a junior entry is the winner of the Okuma rod and reel package and I can see them getting a lot more entries over the rest of the derby. Sean you can pick up the rod and reel at the store anytime so you can use it the rest of the week. They said they were novice fishermen but they could probably do some catfish guiding. Still not a lot of entries considering the number of boats on the water.

WEDNESDAY JULY 28 - Day 5 is complete. It was a rainy morning but it cleared up and the thunderstorms didn't materialize. It was windy but calm on the Ontario side of the river. The Quebec side was a different story, it was rough and hard to fish. There were 50 fish registered at braeside and 16 at Horton for a total of 66 for the day. That brings the overall total registered entries for the boat package to 336. I'm not sure we will hit the 500 mark or not. To put it in perspective if you have just 2 fish registered with 500 entries I'm pretty sure that works out to a 1 in 250 chance at the boat package. So it certainly isn't too late to enter the derby. We had another person get the 12 fish maximum, Mike Pelehos caught 12 nice fish today. The hot spot was the iron train bridge east of Arnprior. There was only 1 change to the leader board Stan Jozwiak caught a nice 7.4lb catfish. The weather looks really good for the next 3 days.

THURSDAY JULY 29 - Day 6 is complete. It was a very windy day and not great for fishing but a lot of fish were weighed in. 38 at Braeside and 26 at Horton for a total of 64 for the day. Jason Deaves weighed in 11 fish over 2 lbs. The largest fish for the day was 11.6lbs weighed in by Dereck Shubrink. That changes the leader board significantly. Instead of Stephen Carriere with 2 of the top 3 now Dereck has 2 of the top 3 spots. No change for the junior leader board. The weather looks good for the last 2 days but that is what they said for today too and it was very windy. We will see if the weather man is right in the morning. We are at exactly 400 entries for the boat package. Looks like we will exceed the 500 mark. I had 2000 printed but I think that is a long shot. LOL. Good luck to everyone the last 2 days. I was at the store today so I'm not sure what the best bait was today.
FRIDAY JULY 30 - Friday is now complete. It was another very windy day which kept a lot of boats off the water. Lets hope that the weather man isn't wrong 4 days in a row. There were 22 weighed in at Horton and 38 weighed in at Braeside for a total of 60 for the day. That brings the overall total to 460. Only one day left. Remember that the final weigh in is 4pm and the draw for the boat package will be at between 6 and 6:30pm at the Prior sports bar. Only one change to the leader board Eric Miller is now in fifth place.
